At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Secretary of State Monroe sends a circular letter to the governor of Kentucky transmitting an act (not included) authorizing the raising of troops and requesting men from Shelby's state. Written a few weeks after the Battle of New Orleans and a few weeks before the United States received notice of the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812.
