At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three cannons and about a hundred soldiers are visible. Fredericksburg lies in the background, meaning that the battery is located on Stafford Heights. The photograph was taken during the Second Battle of Fredericksburg, also known as the Second Battle of Marye's Heights, part of the Chancellorsville Campaign. A label below the image bears the title and subtitle. The subtitle reads "Fredericksburgh, May 3, 1863."
