At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Acknowledges receipt of previous correspondence from Hand. Plans to "obtain from the State Dept. papers which you need to use in the prosecution directly with the Mexican Gov't of the claims to which these papers relate... it is necessary that you should make a formal application to the State Dept. for these papers, stating the situation in which your claims stand under the disposition which was made of them by the Mexican Commission, and also the basis and importance of the further prosecution of your claims with the Mexican Gov't..."
