At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Various stereocard and other smaller photograph prints, most unmounted, relating to the Civil War in Virginia. The images come from Thomas G. Knight, who worked in Brady's studios (it is said) as a teenager. Included are images of Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and various forts around Washington. Includes images of soldiers playing ball, some freedmen (unidentified location), Winfield Scott and battlefields with soldiers' remains (Fredericksburg - Marye's Heights; Gettysburg; trenches at Petersburg).
