At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Complains of his poverty. Recently joined a volunteer company, thinking it was his last chance to join the army. Comments on fishing, his most common pastime. Writes, "There was a little battle not far from this place at West Point on Little Red River 10 abolitionists killed several more wounded. I think they was sent Down from Memphis Tenn By Abe Lincoln he has an army stationed at the sity of Washington of 30000 men but they will be knocked into a cocked hat before 3 months from this day."
