At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "…your goodness particularly to my little boy has filled me with the most lively gratitude which however would not pain me if I had any other method of shewing you my feelings than by professions only. I am disgusted with professions: The world makes use of them, alas I know too well how fallaciously…"
