At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Humphreys, an aide-de-camp for George Washington, informs Knox that Washington "thinks in the present state of our Ammunition not more than 15,000 of the Cartridges at Succasanna can be spared to the State of New Jersey..." Asks Knox to issue the order pertaining to the cartridges. Relates that Washington will also inform [William] Livingston, Governor of New Jersey, of the same. In a post script, instructs Knox to send the order in favor of Elias Woodruff.
