At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Blaine offers his congratulations to his correspondent upon entering the field of journalism and offers only the advice to make his newpaper "absolutely trustworthy" since journalism is a "tiers etat of political power in America." He believes that swash-buckler, reckless, large-typed" journals shall fail among respectable people.
