At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Washington as commander of the Continental Army to Major General McDougall. References McDougall's letter from October 5, 1783. Authorizes McDougall to visit New York on business. Says he has tried to discourage American troops from visiting New York City, which was still occupied by the British, for trifling reasons.
