At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Harding acknowledges how the "railroad situation" affects Rapp's business and indicates that he wants "the government policy to be one leading to the railway restoration" but admits a current discouraging outlook. Letter signed 18 days after his inauguration and written on White House stationery. Rapp worked for the Prendergast Company of Marion, Ohio, and was an old friend of Harding's.
