At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The American Forest Conference brought together representatives from the lumbering, mining and grazing industries, railroad, and irrigation to discus forestry. Special attention was given to the proper use of forests by all fields, with responsible laws passed by Congress to protect private owners with governmental control for public purposes only. The conference also called for the creation of a national forest service
