At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to Carroll as Commissioner for the City of Washington. The letter discusses the "free stone" on Washington's property, a plan of Mr. Greenleaf to sell lots and buildings (George Washington directs him to the Commissioners), and Greenleaf's proposal to build a city hospital. The letter mentions quarries and marble for building the Capitol. Washington's signature is repaired. Docketed on page 4.
