At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Shortly after General Winfield Scott's retirement as head of the U.S. army, Lincoln writes to General McClellan, Scott's successor. Lincoln asks him to find a place for Major Wright, a member of Scott's former staff. McClellan's note on the verso, dated March 8, 1862, refers the matter to a subordinate.
