Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Submitted by Quartermaster General and Brevet Major General Meigs. Printed by the Government Printing Office. Prepared in the central office of the Quartermaster General under Brevet Brigadier General Alexander J. Perry. Contains record of 16,485 graves of deceased Union soldiers in the cemetery at Nashville. 12,486 men have been identified while 4,472 are classified as "Unknown." The records are divided up by state. The names are in alphabetical order under each state heading. Gives rank, company, regiment, date of death, section, number of grave, and original place of internment. Published by the authority of the Secretary of War.
