At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A business letter concerning the management of Monticello while Jefferson served as president. Jefferson writes that he cannot increase an employee's wages from 60 pounds to 100, and asks Randolph to find a replacement. Thomas Randolph and Jefferson's daughter Martha married in 1790.
