Since 2004, 749 exemplary American history teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools in all fifty states, Department of Defense schools, Washington DC, and US territories have been named State History Teacher of the Year. The National History Teacher of the Year is named in the fall. The 2018 State History Teachers of the Year were asked informal interview questions by the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

Do you have a favorite/funny moment from teaching?

I really enjoy the classes in which I can work with the students beyond the classroom. For example, Academic Decathlon allowed me to really get to know my students. Also, as an ESL teacher, I worked with students to create a book about their experiences coming to the United States. 

Tell us one fun historical fact about the town you live in or grew up in. 

I grew up on a farm near Craig, Nebraska. Craig was built as a water station for the railroad. Currently, there are 199 residents.

What is your favorite historical site or museum?

Last Christmas, we visited the Hanoi Hilton Museum. It is so fascinating to see the perspective of a different country about an event and place.

If you could travel back in time and meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?

Eleanor of Aquitaine. She was married to two of the most powerful kings. 

What is your favorite historical film or series?

Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam. It is so moving between the music and the letters. 

Do your students have a favorite historical topic or era?

Every student always likes a little something different. The ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s seem to really catch the attention of some.

What advice would you give to young people, in high school or college, who may be considering a career in education but are unsure?

Being a teacher is the absolutely best job. It is truly a calling; it is a profession that you feel in your heart. Of course, you will work hard, perhaps harder than you really think you want to. However, all the hard work is paid back over and over.
