Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated cabinet card of a portrait of a girl by a mirror. Text on card reads, "A Slave Girl from New Orleans." Reverse side details the photographer's name, Charles Paxson and that proceeds from purchases of these photographs will go to the education of "Colored People in the department of the Gulf."
