At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto published by United Press International dated April 7, 1968. Comprised of eight portraits of various mourners of Dr. King. According to the telephoto description, the pictures were taken as King's body was lying in state at the Sisters Chapel of Spelman College.
