At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Janet Fukushima dated March 8, 1943 addressed to Franklin F. Hopper, director of the New York Public Library with a summary of the Forum on Japanese American in the Victory Program. Thanking Hopper for participating in the forum held at the Hotel Commodore in New York City. States the financial amount needed for the committee. Lists a summary of the proceedings of the forum; its' attendees and their concerns, resolutions recommended and call for "loyal Japanese Americans" to join the war effort.
