At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Eve Harris to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 29, 1974. Harris supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She threatens to vote against Moorhead and writes, "although I realize that you must vote your conscience, I too have a conscience, and I will feel compelled to vote for your opponent, Richard Hallin, come November!"
