At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Eleanor Keith Wilson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 30, 1974. Wilson supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "The tapes clearly show that he has encouraged and even ordered subordinates to commit unlawful acts. This mater transcends party loyalties. We urge you to follow the statesmanlike approach of other Republicans on the Judiciary Committee."
