At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

McKray supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "The trauma of impeachment I believe we can stand. The establishment of a precedent whereby the President of the United States can with impunity abuse the prerogatives of his office and treat with contempt our democratic traditions I believe we cannot."
