At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Andrew Thomsen and Margeret Thomsen to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 6, 1974. Thomsen is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Are country has suffered enough this past year, and we feel it is time the Legislative bodys, Democrats and Republicans alike put partisanship aside and make an all out effort to go forward on behalf of our great country"
