At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mr. and Mrs. Seth J. Petersen to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 7, 1974. Petersen supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "We sincerely recommend that all California representatives and senators in Washington combine in immediate action toward removal of the thoroughly unreliable, untrustworthy, self-perfectionist only, President of these heretofore highly respected and unequaled UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
