At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Judson N. Walker to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1974. Walker supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He quotes Benjamin Franklin and concludes that, "President Nixon has used executive privilege to the extent of changing our form of elected government to an appointive system."
