At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Ruth Kellam to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated December 10, 1973. Kellam supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She mentions presidential levels of privilege and writes "A private citizen charged with such crimes would surely be brought to indictment." Kellam is the Clerk for the Providence Monthly Meeting of Friends.
