At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Clarence T. Griep to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 1, 1974. Griep supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions a growing disillusionment about the Nixon administration and writes, "It is becoming increasingly apparent that this "law and order" administration is the most lawless and corrupt of any in all American history."
