At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Virginia Russell to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated December 31, 1973. Russell supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "A decent life for all and not just a few, The interests of all and not just special interests and those that are their stooges in congress." Letter is written on letterhead that notes Russell's occupation as a landscape architect.
