At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Rollin Septon to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated December 31, 1973. Septon supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I am so thankful that Mr. Nixon became President. Otherwise, it might have been years and years before the public would have learned how corrupt our whole government is. Although he and his crew have been getting most of the brick-bats, it is obvious from the enclosed article that 'everybody's doin it.'"
