At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Charles C. Collins to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 3, 1973. Collins supports the impeachment of President Nixon. Lists grievances with administration. Also advises Congressmen to "back off from the nomination of Gerald Ford" and suggests, "Nixon is going to go down. Let's not let him take out country -- or the Republican Party -- down with him."
