At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One postcard from Duane M. Tapper to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 3, 1973. Tapper supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "He is no longer believable - the firing of Archibald Cox + now the missing tapes which he promised to produce is just the last straw."
