At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Jacqueline Freedman to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Freedman supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She mentions obstruction of justice, and the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox. She writes, "This can be borne out by the firing of the special prosecutor, who in President Nixon's own words six months ago, would have complete freedom and independence in the investigations."
