At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Thomas R. Rose to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 1, 1973. Rose supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He claims that Nixon holds the country in disregard and has contempt for laws. He references founding fathers; Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln. He writes, "Clearly he [Nixon] has calculated that you do not have the balls to respond to his challenge."
