At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Bill Simpich to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Simpich supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "To lie to the FBI and the fourth amendment violations of the Huston memo are not enough, this country's not what I thought it was."
