At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Margaret Proctor to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Proctor is against the impeachment of President Nixon and does not want Nixon impeached until he is "accused." She writes, "Remember he is a citizen of this country. He should be treated as one. A person is innocent until proven guilty."
