At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Danielle Branton to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Branton supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She comments that she has never been politically active before sending this letter of protest. She writes, "Law and Order (and Justice) begins at home -- therefore impeachment of super-hypocrite Richard M. Nixon is your first order of business."
