At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mildred Rogers to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Rogers supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "If he is not not impeached there is great danger that he will find an excuse to impose martial law against dissenters (his "enemies"), and the press."
