At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Lisa Nemger to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Nemger supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She emphasizes a separation of powers. She also mentions the Watergate tapes, national security and the international situation and writes, "This disregard for the separation of powers principled by the president lends a rather hollow ring to his earlier claim for the right to retention of the so called "Watergate tapes"."
