At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Ray Powers to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Powers supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He urges Moorhead to give the matter of impeachment top priority. He writes, "Is our system of government so weak as to allow for the despotic seizure of government by the executive branch?"
