At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Harold C. Breidenbaugh Jr. to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Breidenbaugh supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He believes that Nixon and his administration are taking part in criminal activity and writes, "Criminal activity at the highest level is visible to all. If it goes unpunished, we are setting [an] undesirable example for the youth of our country."
