At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Oron A. Kirkby and Ruth M. Kirkby to President Richard Milhous Nixon copied to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. The Kirkbys are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They write, "You and your family have our most sincere admiration and unqualified support to remain in the highest office in your country. The President deserves a man of your stature and caliber."
