At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Thomas J. Wiley to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 23, 1973. Wiley supports the impeachment of President Nixon. Wiley mentions he is living in Puerto Rico. He believes that due to Nixon's actions the United States is no longer a model for democracy and states, "I find it hard pressed to continue stating this to my Caribbean Associates with any degree of integrity."
