At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from J.D. Callahan to President Richard Milhous Nixon copied to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 30, 1973. Callahan supports the impeachment of President Nixon. the letter mentions the FBI, CIA, and missions in Cambodia and writes, "Your assaults on our institutions and our trust have left our country in a state of nervous exhaustion."
