At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Dino Philips to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 1, 1973. Philips supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions the lost tapes, and several other offenses by Nixon. He writes, "If you truly believe the president is 'leaning over backwards to satisfy the American people' then you had better go get your head examined."
