At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One note from Paul H. Rauch to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. Rauch is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He writes regarding the media, "the climate of distrust, suspicion, and hate that has been generated by the news media and the Liberal politicians is a far greater crime against the American people."
