At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert Winemiller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated September 29, 1943. Robert writes "at least you don't have any trouble cleaning wooden rifle." Robert asks if Leonard is located close to his brother's company and closes telling Leonard he has being going to dances a lot and that "Kansas City is okay!!" Signed, "Fuzz."
