At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert Winemiller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated July 17, 1943. Robert warns Leonard to stay out of the military once again. He suggests that three months into basic training Leonard apply for Officer Candidate School. Robert is dismayed that "Dottie" got engaged and notes "There won't be any girls left by the time I get back." Robert concludes his letter, "Write soon & stay out of the Infantry" Signed, "Fuzz."
