At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert Winemiller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated July 10, 1943. Robert is writing with six more weeks of maneuvers. He hopes that his new location will be close to he and Leonard's hometown and invites Leonard to come see him. His postscript relays "We are fighting against airborne, quite the thing- no water no food!!" Signed, "Fuzz."
