At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Moe tells the story of a man called into the army whose wife was pregnant. He wanted to keep his first baby a secret so he had the hospital authorities inform him in code. He also realizes that he and Sylvia were playing the same game at the same time and sees this as proof of their affinity.
