Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sylvia wants to share the anguish about training in his letters, but since she receives them about four days later, thinks at least that it is already over for him. Says she is prepared for anything in regard to his being transferred after he finishes training. Talks about the first time they ever kissed on a bench on Eastern Parkway [Brooklyn] on May 30th twelve years ago.
